Building a list (without SPAMMING) – respect the law, respect your customers!
OK – you may have a customer list from your existing online business. Fantastic!

You may think that you can simply load the email addresses of your existing customers into an automated emailer (Aweber is probably the best and most widely used) and blast your customers, telling them about your wonderful new business (Internet Marketing).
WARNING!!! 
Although the law might suggest that you are entitled to email en mass to your existing clients, DON’T DO IT!!! You would be entering into muddy waters, with exploding mines.
So how do you capture your valued customer details in to a program like Aweber?
(In fact, Aweber does not allow you to simply upload mailing lists in to theirs (under normal circumstances)).
Also note: If these reputable Autoresposnder/eMailer companies (Aweber, being very reputable) suspect that you are SPAMMING they will close your account. It’s not worth the risk.
Also note: If your Internet Service Provider (ISP) suspects that your are SPAMMING they will close your account. Again, it’s not worth the risk.
So what’s the answer?
From my online retail business we have 1000′s of customers, but there’s real a need to put the ‘ego’ aside and face reality. I realise that over 90% of our customers that haven’t bought from us for over a week, would not know who I am or the name of my company. This is FACT. Most people can’t recall what they ate for dinner the night before, so why would they remember an online transaction a week or so ago? Even though my service is exemplary and we are proud of our feedback and positive responses, I cannot assume that our company is remembered in any way by my customers (unless a bad service or product is delivered – strangely people tend to remember a ‘negative‘ over a ‘positive‘.) So, sending customers a ‘generic’ email, based on the premise that they’ve bought from you in the past, could harm your business and aggravate your valued customers.
So what’s the answer?
My advice is to invite your existing customers to join your ‘opt-in’ subscriber list, by personal email – may be send a few personal emails at a time and offer a ‘must-have’ incentive for them to leave their details and sign-up to the opt-in list.
The term ‘opt-in’ is used to describe how the customer must agree to sign-up to the list/newsletter, by entering his/her details. Aweber would subscribe to a double opt-in, where the customer is sent a confirmation email to be added to the list.
This approach is far safer, more personal, respecting the law and just as importantly, your customers.
Keep your business, risk free, even if it requires a little bit of work at the outset.
You may have guessed, I’m a big fan of Aweber. If you wish to be professional about mailing to your customers then invest in Aweber (don’t cut-corners here).

I have small list on the Aweber system so they are all genuine double opt-in sign ups and they still mark my mails as spam.
I make every effort to build a relationship with my list only reccomending products I have used personally, as well as sending tips advice and free stuff but they still do it.
I guess to some people we will always be spammers.
Makes you wonder why they ever opted-in the first place.

Your comments make sense, Clive. Yes, even though your subscribers have signed-up to your list, like many people they have forgotten and are somewhat surprised to receive a mail from you. Conclusion: SPAM and TRASH.
It’s tough. I realised, that even with my buying clients I have to tread carefully, before blasting them with a generic mailer, but as this article states, it’s about respect.
We seem to be caught between a ‘rock’ and a ‘hard-place’. I’m testing a number of approaches to build my list (from my existing client base) and will update you on the progress. Thanks again Clive.

This is a great looking site!!
After reading through this article, it struck a chord with me. This is such a sensible approach to wisely using a list that you already have.
I was in a situation where I had a lot of emails from another programme. It took some thinking about how do I transfer them over.
At the time, I was using a different autoresponder and I did a search in their help. What they suggested was to load up the emails and send out a request to keep it legal and spam free.
And, similar to what you did, I put in the request where I got their details from and asked if they would be happy to receive information from me, ie, to “opt-in”. Quite a few of them did and were OK with it. So, what you have suggested is a great “ethical” way of doing it.

Thanks for your feedback. It’s much appreciated. I mention this SPAMMING issue only because it is so tempting to blast existing customers with a new venture, thinking that this would be the right thing to do. I realise, it would be high risk and probably annoy the very clients that I have worked so hard to have, so far.
I intend to personally write to them all, offering an invitation to join a ‘list’. Before I do this, however, included in the mail will be a fantastic offer (for free) and opportunity to join the “members’ bar”. My customers are mainly cyclists, so hope to build up a niche in this area. A membership for ‘mad-cyclists’ – sort of thing!!!
We’ll see how it goes.

I had to comment on this post. I too share a love for AWeber! They make list management a breeze. The opt-in forms are fantastic and yes they help keep you in a safe zone. Like you, I also don’t like to bombard my list with endless sales pitches. I would rather cultivate a relationship with my list members and submit those products which I trust and would be of help to a particular audience.

I love the way you describe about spamming. Its true that customer always forget who they are dealing with.
Even if you did sell them your product yesterday, they may not remember who you are the next day.
Thats why marketer work their tail off building relation with their customer.
